Road Safety

The term Road Safety refers to those activities which are carried out that attempt to reduce the risk of collisions (road accidents); and should they occur, reduce the level of injury.

The majority of collisions are caused by road user behaviour rather than an aspect of the infrastructure they were using or a mechanical failure of the vehicle they were driving at the time. Collisions that arise from road user behaviour can be simply categorised as being due to:

Poor attitudes e.g. driving under the influence of alcohol.
User group issues e.g. the lack of experience of young drivers.
Human error e.g. misjudgement.

So it is not unreasonable to assume that if the following 8 Point Care Code was adopted by all road users then there would be far fewer road casualties each year.

  1. Keep to the speed limit.
  2. Keep your distance from the vehicle in front.
  3. Be in a fit condition to drive.
  4. Drive for the conditions.
  5. Do not be distracted.
  6. Do not take risks.
  7. Seek further skills.
  8. Maintain your vehicle.
